Chrome OS 53 Starts Rolling Out, Brings Google Play and Android Apps With It

The ASUS Chromebook Flip is now receiving the dev channel version of Chrome 53, and in it is visible, working support for Google Play. This would mark the first device to get the functionality even though it’s through a non-stable channel.

It seems other devices that are getting the update — like the Chromebook Pixel — aren’t yet showing this functionality, so we aren’t sure if it’s an error or if it’s a server-side thing that Google wants to test with a specific subset of users before letting everyone else in on the fun. That said, if users are starting to see it at all, then it means we’re close to a full-fledged rollout.

Those with the ASUS Chromebook Flip will want to get on the dev channel right away. Here’s how you do that:
  1. Sign in to your Chromebook with the owner account.
  2. Click the status area, where your account picture appears.
  3. Click Settings > About Chrome OS > More info….
  4. Click the Change channel… button.
  5. Pick a channel from the box that appears.

And voila. You’ll soon get an update that’ll take you to the latest version with Android apps ready for your fingers to play around with. Have fun!
